Shelly Bryant’s journey didn’t begin with a business plan – it began with a poem, a question, and a quiet determination to understand what lies beneath the surface of language.
As a literary translator working between Chinese and English, Shelly quickly discovered that success wasn’t just about fluency. It was about cultural fluency – being able to sense what can’t be Googled, what isn’t said out loud, what only makes sense if you understand the rhythms, relationships, and philosophies behind the words.
Her first major translation, Northern Girls by Sheng Keyi, earned her a spot on the Man Asian Literary Prize longlist. But what it really gave her was clarity: the ability to navigate China’s deep narrative structures and unspoken codes was rare – and valuable. While accolades followed, so did a realization. Many people translated language. Few people could translate intent.
In the early years, Shelly often found herself caught between worlds: a foreigner interpreting stories rooted in someone else’s cultural soil, yet deeply committed to honoring what made those stories powerful. She faced skepticism. Imposter syndrome. And the weight of representing narratives not her own.
But instead of stepping back, she stepped in deeper.
She listened. She studied. She sat quietly in Suzhou gardens, in Shanghai teahouses, in boardrooms across Asia. Over time, what emerged wasn’t just a voice, but a vantage point.
By 2017, Shelly had launched TL Global Insights (formerly Tender Leaves Translation) – not as a translation agency, but as a cultural intelligence consultancy. Drawing on her rare combination of cross-cultural storytelling, strategic framing, and lived experience across China and Southeast Asia, she began helping leaders understand why their strategies often failed – not because the ideas were wrong, but because the signals were misaligned.
Today, as a China Strategy Insider, Shelly advises multinational executives, creatives, and institutions on how to earn trust, shape narrative, and lead with cultural intelligence. Her clients come to her not for “China 101,” but for what’s harder to teach:
