When Shelly presented a half-day workshop for our first cohort in the Master of Arts in Translation and Interpretation (MTI) Programme at Nanyang Technological University, I was so impressed with her approach that I immediately sought to incorporate her into our teaching staff on a regular basis. It worked out beautifully. Shelly has since become an integral part of the MTI programme, where her course on literary translation has become a cornerstone of the curriculum. Her influence has truly shaped our students’ understanding and appreciation of literary translation, leaving a lasting impact on their academic and professional journeys.

Shelly’s commitment to diversity and mutual respect is evident in everything she does. Whether in the classroom, at workshops, or during her speaking engagements, she fosters an environment where ideas can be exchanged openly and equally. She has a natural ability to connect with her audience, encouraging them to see their work not as mere tasks but as opportunities to bridge cultural divides and deepen mutual understanding. Her influence goes far beyond teaching; she inspires her students and audiences to think critically, engage fully, and approach each project with purpose and empathy.

Testimonials

I have known Shelly Bryant for more than 10 years now. She is the most intellectually energetic person I know. She not only has ideas, but thinks through effective ways to bring those ideas into fruition. She has a thoroughly creative approach to the challenges those ideas present, forms a set of inter-connected strategies to deal with them and then forges the necessary relationships to turn those ideas into reality. She thinks deeply and gives whatever she tackles all of the energy it demands to make sure it will produce results. Yet working alongside Shelly is not an easy ride. She has the ability to involve you with her enthusiasm and she makes sure that you are thinking, contributing, learning, actively engaging with the project. To me, this is one of Shelly’s greatest strengths, her lived commitment to collaborative learning.

Shelly Bryant is an impassioned and thoughtful speaker and writer. She impresses with her wealth of knowledge and experience. But more importantly, she has the ability to connect with her audience in an empathetic way that makes her talks thoroughly resonant and enjoyable.
