To Wake, To Speak Discussion Thread

Hi all, After our engaging discussion on Friday night in which we examined 4 options for translating the Lu Xun passage, I got several notes from different participants, all following up on a central question that helps us think more clearly about the translation problem. The central issue was Lu Xun's own commitment to writing in plain language for his audiences. So the question I think we should ask ourselves about that is how his commitment to plain language should affect our approach to translation.

Looking forward to continuing the discussion here! (and, please be watching for the followup on the Ye Shengtao and Ba Jin passages as well🙂)

Just a quick update: I had been preparing an ebook to sell in our online store, and I decided that it had significant overlap with the material we discussed in To Wake, To Speak. After considering several options for how best to divide the material, I decided not to divide it at all, but to combine it into one ebook. I will be posting it for sale in our online store, but I've also decided to make it available to everyone who purchased access to To Wake, To Speak (either direct access to the program or through subscription). The ebook expands our discussion on the literature of resistance to other movements, languages, and cultures, and it considers what an ethical approach to translating these works might look like. You can find the ebook available at the program site now – a pre-release before it is made available in the shop! I hope you enjoy it!
