Belonging is something we often describe as a feeling. We feel at home, out of place, welcomed, understood, or excluded. But those feelings do not appear from nowhere. They are shaped, in part, by language. Every community develops its own vocabulary, references, humor, assumptions, and ways of speaking. These small signals help us recognize who is familiar, who understands the rules, and who seems to be standing just outside the circle. They can create connection, but they can also create distance. In The Language of Belonging, we explore how language helps build communities, how people learn to move between different linguistic and cultural worlds, and why sharing the same language does not always mean sharing the same understanding. Across five short prerecorded videos, we will look at the hidden grammar of groups, bilingual and cross-cultural experience, code-switching, misunderstanding, trust, translation, and the ways language can become an act of hospitality. The program asks a larger question throughout: What kind of language invites another person into a shared world? The prerecorded series is followed by a live session, Who Gets to Belong?, which opens the discussion onto questions of boundaries, adaptation, assimilation, power, and the difference between belonging and simply fitting in. The program includes: Five prerecorded videos of approximately seven minutes each, designed as one connected journey through the subject.
