Polyphony: The Translator as Conductor

  • 6 Steps

About

This five-part Between the Lines program on translation as the art of bringing many voices into relation begins with literary translation, then gradually opens toward adaptation, reception, and localization, without turning into a business course. The central proposition is that a translator does not carry a single voice across a linguistic boundary. They coordinate a living ensemble: author, narrator, characters, form, history, cultural reference, target-language possibilities, reader expectation, and sometimes editors, publishers, platforms, or institutions. Their task is not to make every element identical to the original, which is impossible, but to make the work capable of being heard anew.
