The Sound of Water: Flow, Yielding, and Persistence

  • 5 Steps

About

Water is one of the most enduring images in Chinese philosophy and garden design. It can be still or restless, gentle or powerful, visible or hidden. It yields to the landscape around it, yet over time, it can reshape even stone. In The Sound of Water: Flow, Yielding, and Persistence, we begin with the experience of water in the Chinese garden and follow it into a larger exploration of movement, adaptability, resistance, and change. Drawing on the Daodejing, Chinese cultural traditions, and the physical qualities of water itself, the program considers why something so soft became such a compelling image of strength. Across five short videos, we explore the sound and presence of water, the relationship between yielding and strength, what happens when movement encounters resistance, and the quiet work of persistence over time. Along the way, water offers a different way of thinking about flow, not as the absence of obstacles, but as the capacity to respond to changing conditions without losing what continues beneath those changes. The program concludes by returning to the garden and to a deceptively simple idea: becoming like water. Rather than reducing that idea to a lesson in flexibility, we consider the many forms water can take and what they reveal about knowing when to move, when to yield, when to persist, and when to find another way through. The program includes five prerecorded video sessions and a live online session that extends the ideas explored in the series.
