About

From Meaning to Expression: When Language Sounds Real, But Says Nothing In a world where images can be fabricated, voices cloned, and fluent language generated in seconds, how do we know when language is actually carrying meaning? This 25-minute bilingual guided reading brings together three ways of engaging with one original English micro-essay: A Perspective / 一个视角 An original micro-essay written and read by literary translator and writer Shelly Bryant. Dr. Sun Li leads a close reading of the essay, using English and Chinese to explore structure, vocabulary, phrasing, and meaning. Shelly Bryant and Sun Li discuss one language decision that emerged from the writing and reading of the essay. The full English essay is included at the end as a learning resource. We recommend listening and working through the close reading before reading the full text, giving you the opportunity to practise listening, reading, and comprehension first. Total listening & viewing time: approx.
