Thinking in Metaphors | 以喻思维

About

How language shapes perception—across China, Southeast Asia, and the spaces in between. We don’t just speak in metaphors. We think in them. We live in them. In this five-part series, we explore how metaphors shape the way we experience power, time, identity, and change—across cultures, across languages, and especially across the dynamic relationship between China and Southeast Asia. From the symbolism of the rice bowl, to metaphors of face, tide, and hierarchy, this program invites you to reflect on the words we use and the worldviews they carry. Through Chinese, Malay, English, and regional examples, we’ll uncover how metaphors can connect—or confuse—and how they quietly structure the way we live and lead. This isn’t a China-vs-West comparison. It’s a deeper look at the China–Southeast Asia metaphorical landscape, drawn from where we actually live and work. 🎥 What’s Included: - 5 core video episodes (5–8 minutes each) - Bonus short clips for deeper insight and reflection - Live session: Metaphors We Live In (Replay available after event) 🧠 Topics We Explore: - How nature, direction, and movement shape our ideas of success - The metaphors of “face,” “rice bowl,” and “power” across cultures - Why time runs in English, flows in Malay, and opens pathways in Chinese - What happens when metaphors cross borders—and misfire Metaphor isn’t just how we express ideas. It’s how we see. And once you start seeing metaphor, you start seeing everything differently.
